When to go to the emergency room.


Are you having trouble breathing?

If you are experiencing severe dental infections that result in swelling and are affecting your airway, this is a life-threatening dental emergency. It is essential to go to the ER for immediate treatment with IV antibiotics.

Did you experience trauma to your face?

If you have sustained trauma to your facial bones or structures, or if you are having trouble breathing, it's necessary to go to the ER for assessment and treatment right away.

When to Seek Dental Emergency Care:


Did you lose a tooth?

Prompt assessment and treatment could potentially save your tooth. If your injury is confined to your teeth and oral tissues.

Do you have a dental infection?

An abscess (a severe infection with swelling) inside your mouth can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. In some cases, you may observe lumps or swelling on your gums, including swelling around your face and neck.

Are you experiencing significant pain?

Severe oral pain can be a sign of a dental emergency.

Are you experiencing oral bleeding?

Bleeding is a possible sign of a dental emergency, particularly if you are unable to control the bleeding by applying firm, direct pressure with a clean gauze or washcloth.

Here are some common dental issues and what to do about them:


Chipped or Cracked Tooth

If you have a chipped or cracked tooth that doesn't hurt, you can wait until regular office hours for treatment. Keep the area clean and use sensitive toothpaste in the affected area until your appointment.

Toothache

If you have a toothache that is not severe and there are no signs of an abscess (such as fever, facial swelling, or bumps on the gums), you can also wait for treatment until regular office hours.

Crowns and Fillings

If you have lost a filling or crown, you can wait for treatment until regular office hours. Keep the area clean and use sensitive toothpaste in the affected area until your appointment.
